Wolfgang Laib

Watching the Gregory Lent video, I remembered Wolfgang Laib. Perhaps because both follow spiritual paths, which become intertwined in their work,  Also, the use of pigment, or in Laibs work, pigment not yet extracted. I remember taking a class of undergraduates to his exhibition at the Henry in Seattle. These students hated the work of Joseph Beuys, (who to me has meant much), ( one of his works is above). Many of them had little interest in art at all. But when they entered the room, filled with brilliant yellow pollen, they were speechless, and did not want to leave. It attracted everyone who entered. Yet it was also inseparable from the simple actions of Laib, who lives quietly in the country, where his work is that of a simple gatherer.

Large installation of pollen, collected by hand by Laib and installed in museum.

And as I searched for this, I came across a site, with beautiful images of pollen and bogs. Since bogs are a fascination of mine, for symbolic reasons, I am very happy…
